Separatory Funnel Introduction

A separatory funnel, also known as separation funnel, separating funnel,or collquially sep funnel, is a piece of laboratory glassware used in liquid-liquid extractions to separate (partition) the components of a mixture into two immiscible solvent phases of different densities.

Precautions for the use of pear-shaped separatory funnel:

①Check if the separatory funnel is leaking;
②Pour the mixed liquid into the separatory funnel, put the separatory funnel on the iron ring and let it stand still
③Open the piston of the separatory funnel, and then open the cock, so that the lower layer of liquid (water) is discharged from the lower end of the separatory funnel, and the cock can be closed when the oil-water interface is tangent to the upper mouth of the cock;
④ Pour the upper liquid (oil) from the upper mouth of the separatory funnel.
Note: If a pear-shaped separatory funnel is used for extraction operation: When shaking, the small groove of the piston should be closed and plugged tightly with the small hole on the side of the funnel mouth. During liquid separation, the lower layer of liquid flows out of the funnel neck, and the upper layer of liquid has to be poured out from the funnel mouth.
Note: After the separatory funnel is cleaned, take the stopper out, do not insert it in the separatory funnel, especially before entering the oven; when the separatory funnel is not used for a long time, add a paper to the piston surface to prevent adhesion. And use a rubber band to cover the piston to avoid loss.
