A funnel is a ceramic device used in the laboratory, also made of plastic, for filtration using vacuum or negative pressure suction.

The shape is flat cylinder, and the bottom surface of the cylinder is cut with many small holes. It is connected with a long and narrow tube outlet.

In use, the bottom of the cylinder is lined with filter paper, the funnel is inserted into the opening above the flask and the interface is sealed (for example, with a rubber ring). The side port of the beaker is connected with the pumping system. The solid and liquid mixture to be separated is then poured into the top, the liquid component is pumped into the beaker under negative pressure, and the solid remains on the top.

It is often used in organic chemistry experiments to extract crystals. After filtration in this case, a small amount of pure solvent can also be used on top to wash off the impurities on the crystal surface.

Before use, it is necessary to prepare suction equipment, such as vacuum pump, filter bottle, funnel holder (sealing ring), vacuum tube (rubber tube), filter paper, funnel, etc.

First, wet the filter paper with water and pump it, so that the filter paper is close to the bottom of the funnel, which can prevent the leakage of the things to be filtered. Pour in the filtrate, turn on the machine to pump, can stir a little, leaving only the filtered material.

Direct use of ordinary funnel, affixed with filter paper, connected to the pumping pump suction filter (instead of funnel) is not possible. Because the walls of the funnel are close to the filter paper, the negative pressure suction filter has no effect on it. Only the bottom corner of the funnel produces a pressure difference. Since the opening is large and has only one opening, it is easy to break. (Wet filter paper is not strong)

Instructions

1. Fold the filter paper in two folds and fold it into a 90° center angle.

2. Put the folded filter paper into three layers on one side and one layer on the other to form a funnel shape.

3. Put the funnel-shaped filter paper into the funnel. The edge of the filter paper should be lower than the edge of the funnel. Pour some water into the funnel mouth to make the wet filter paper adhere to the inner wall of the funnel, and then pour off the remaining water for use.

4. Install the funnel with the filter paper on the filter funnel rack (such as the ring of the iron stand), place the flask or test tube that receives the filtrate under the funnel neck, and place the tip of the funnel neck against the wall of the receiving container. .

5. When injecting the liquid to be filtered into the funnel, hold the beaker with the liquid on the right and hold the glass rod on the left. The lower end of the glass rod is placed close to the three layers of filter paper, and the beaker cup is tightly attached to the glass rod until the liquid flows into the funnel.

6. When the liquid passes through the filter paper and flows down the neck of the funnel, check whether the liquid flows down the wall of the cup and inject into the bottom of the cup. If not, move the beaker or rotate the funnel so that the funnel tip fits against the beaker wall.
